Digital Image Processing, Vol 2, No 5 (2010), Pagination: 125-130Abstract
The proposed paper presents a new approach to color image segmentation by fusing Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) and Atanassov's Intuitionistic Fuzzy Set (A-IFS) Histon. The method proposed here does not require prior knowledge about the no. of clusters. The proposed method also calculates the threshold value automatically for segmentation. This method calculates membership values using conventional FCM and uses A-IFS Histon for calculating the no. of clusters and employs roughness index for segmentation. In the homogeneous region, the roughness index is more and is close to unity value, whereas, in the boundary region, it is small. The qualitative and quantitative comparison of the proposed method yields better results against the recently developed A-IFS Histon technique.Keywords

The electric power industries are restructured to meet the growing load demand. The process of restructuring leads the industry into competition. The wheeling transactions are allowed to carry out the power transfer between the power producers and customers. The generators are rescheduled to meet the change in load demand and wheeling transactions. In this paper, the gradient method is used to determine the generator operating conditions under various load scenarios. The proposed gradient (steepest descent) based algorithm is demonstrated on the Indian Utility System.Keywords

The present investigation is to analyse the influence of boost pressure and injection pressure on combustion process and emissions for various engine loads and speeds. A single cylinder diesel engine that is equipped with a manual direct injection system is considered for the experimental work. Emissions such as HC, NOx and brake specific fuel consumption were monitored using gas analyzer. A turbocharger and dilution tunnel is designed such a way that a boost pressure will be created from the compressor driven turbine using engine exhaust. The compressed air was mixed with the exhaust gas in the dilution tunnel to oxidize the hydrogen and carbon into water vapour and carbon dioxide.Keywords

Background/Objectives: The steel-concrete composite construction has become an effective construction practice in the recent years. The cold form profiled sheet acts a platform for during the construction phase and acts as an external reinforcement after the construction. In steel-concrete composite construction, the shear connectors transfer the longitudinal shear force across the steel flange/concrete interface. The ability to transfer longitudinal shear force by shear connectors mainly depends on the strength of concrete against longitudinal cracking and mechanical properties of the shear connectors. This research investigates shear connector's capacity; the experimental investigation is involved using push-out test for two sets with different shear connectors framing to the profile steel sheet. Methods/Statistical Analysis: Set-W consists of three composite slab specimens with welded stud shear connectors, while set-B consists of three composite slab specimens with bolted shear connectors. Trapezoidal profile steel sheet of thickness 1 mm with rectangular embossments is used. Several key parameters of the composite slab are examined and measured, including slippage capacity, load carrying capacity, composite slab ductility and failure mechanism. Findings: the welded shear connectors provided a better performance in resisting slippage and providing a welded set higher load carrying capacity, however, the bolted shear connector specimens set showed more ductile behavior as compared to of specimens.Keywords

Objectives: The effect of selective coatings on the solar absorber of a Parabolic Dish Collector (PDC) is presented in this work. Methods/Statistical Analysis: Outdoor experiments performed on sunny days at a 16 square meter. PDC with selective absorber of 0.4 m diameter. The Mild Steel (MS) absorber plates coated with nickel and chromium for their low emissivity and high absorptivity using the electroplating process with thicknesses of 30 μm. Findings: Instantaneous efficiency, radiative and convective heat losses evaluated for the absorber. The efficiency of collector system is highest when the mild steel absorber plate coated with nickel. Application/Improvements: The solar selective coatings are more beneficial in the energy transfer and economical to the consumers. The consistent higher absorption rate at the outdoor climate has to attain with a long life coating.Keywords

In the present study, the ethanolic leaf extract of Azima tetracantha Lam (A. tetracantha) was investigated for antipyretic activity in rats using Brewer’s yeast induced Pyrexia. The leaves of A. tetracantha were collected from Ponnamaravathi and cut into small pieces and shade dried. The dried powdered leaves (100 gm) were extracted in a Soxhlet apparatus by using 95% ethanol. Albino rats weighing (200-250g) were taken for the experiment divided into four groups of six animals each. Group 1 received 3% aqueous suspension of gum Acacia (1 ml/200g) as vehicle orally, group 2 and group 3 received ethanolic leaf extract of A. tetracantha 100 and 200 mg/kg with 3% aqueous suspension of gum Acacia orally and the group 4 served as standard received paracetamol 25 mg/kg with 3% aqueous suspension of gum Acacia orally. The subcutaneous injection of yeast suspension markedly elevated the rectal temperature after 18h of administration. Treatment with A. tetracantha extract at a dose of 100, 200 mg/kg decreased the rectal temperature of the rats in dose dependent manner. This effect was maximal at dose of 200 mg/kg and it caused significant lowering of body temperature (P< 0.01) up to 4 hour after its administration. The antipyretic effect started as early as 1h and the effect was maintained for 4h, after its administration. Both the standard drug paracetamol 25 mg/kg and tested drug A. tetracantha extract were significantly reduced the yeast elevated rectal temperature, at 2nd, 3rd and 4th hour compared to control group.Keywords

In recent years, there has been a decline in the number of students opting for engineering education worldwide. Especially, the declining enrollment in engineering programs was observed sharp for the last two years in India. The widening unfulfilled gap between the educational institutional purposes and the engineering aspirations are exponentially increasing in recent years. Strong knowledge of international trends in engineering education is vital to introduce the state-of-art infrastructure active and project-based learning facilities in the institutions to impart the required competent skills. A case study on active learning methods is implemented on one of the undergraduate courses and academic performance are compared with the feedback. The top-two learning methodologies are found effective to be project-based learning and conference publication. ALM is observed to be one of the motivating factors to enhance the project-based learning among science and engineering students towards capability development. The student's involvement in learning certainly improves their competency and it could be enhanced by the activity based learning methodologies (ALM) rather than the classroom teaching.Keywords
